Google has announced new investments in digital infrastructure in Finland, further strengthening its long-term commitment to the country. The investment includes data centers, supporting infrastructure, and partnerships with the municipalities of Hamina in southern Finland and Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala in northern Finland.

Alongside the infrastructure investments, Google will continue supporting clean energy initiatives and funding nature and community programs aimed at enhancing local biodiversity, education, research, and skills development.

"Google is proud to deepen our roots in Finland with the company’s largest single investment in Europe, building on more than 15 years of sustained investment in Finland. This investment underscores Google’s commitment to grow our presence responsibly, pairing the expansion of our technical infrastructure with new energy capacity, grid enhancements, and energy affordability initiatives. At the community-level, Google is proud to support programs focused on advancing workforce development, education, and research – helping to unlock long-term economic opportunity both in Finland and across the broader European economy," says Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google.

The investment underlines Finland's growing role in the development of responsible AI infrastructure and demonstrates how long-term partnerships can create lasting value for local communities while advancing ambitious environmental goals. It also further strengthens Google's position as one of Finland's most significant foreign investors, supporting the growth of Finnish supplier and partner networks and creating opportunities across different regions of the country.

"Finland wants to be a partner to the world’s leading technology companies. Google’s investments are a strong sign of confidence in Finland and strengthen the infrastructure on which the digital economy and artificial intelligence are built. What is important for us is that these investments also generate new expertise, business activities and value creation in Finland," says Business Finland Director General Lassi Noponen.

Invest in Finland has supported Google's growth in Finland from the beginning

As part of Business Finland, Invest in Finland promotes foreign direct investments and helps foreign companies establish and expand operations in Finland, including identifying suitable locations and facilitating local partnerships.

Invest in Finland has supported Google's expansion in Finland over the long term, including efforts to identify and develop innovative energy solutions.

"Selecting a location for a data center, or any other investment, requires consideration of a broad range of factors, and this is where we can support our clients. We look at investments as a whole and seek to advance projects that create benefits not only for the investor but also for the region in which they are located," says Jouni Salonen who’s heading the data center business at Invest in Finland.

Google's first Finnish data center was established in Hamina after the company acquired a former paper mill site in 2009 and transformed it into a modern data center campus. Following more than a decade of successful operations, Google began exploring further expansion opportunities in cooperation with Invest in Finland and Fingrid, Finland's transmission system operator.
